In the heart of Northern California lies the growing town of Lincoln, home to the new Twelve Bridges High School. This state-of-the-art institution represents not just an educational milestone for the community, but also a testament to the power of collaboration and perseverance in construction. The story of Twelve Bridges began in 2019, when Goodfellow Bros. (GBI) played a pivotal role in the first phase of the school’s construction. Tasked with mass and finish grading, and the construction of parking lots, hardscapes, and turf sports fields, GBI faced a daunting challenge: excavating the rock-ridden material on site and placing the tough “zero rock” specification for the topsoil. Despite these hurdles, GBI, alongside general contractor and partner Flint Builders, successfully brought the campus to life, laying the foundation for the future of the school.
Fast forward to the present year, and GBI once again found ourselves at the helm of the second phase of Twelve Bridges High School’s development. This time, the scope of our work was even more ambitious, including the creation of new junior varsity baseball and softball fields, replacing the topsoil at the existing varsity fields, developing new hardscape areas, and preparing two new building pads for a restroom and concession stand.
Aware of the challenges posed by the topsoil specifications from their previous experience, GBI took proactive measures. We sourced multiple soil options, ensuring the best possible topsoil for the project. Over the summer, GBI imported approximately 25,000 cubic yards of soil, working closely with Flint Builders and the Western Placer Unified School District to deliver a product that exceeded expectations.
One of the highlights of this phase was GBI’s value engineering strategies, which played a crucial role in meeting the district’s budget while enhancing the quality of the project. By securing approval for an alternate topsoil source located just nine minutes from the site, GBI provided significant cost savings. These savings allowed the district to opt for sod instead of hydroseed for the fields, a decision that not only improved the quality of the playing surfaces but also streamlined the project timeline.
