Situation
SW 209th Avenue is located east of Hillsboro, Oregon’s growing South Hillsboro development. As the area continued to expand, traffic volumes were expected to increase significantly along this Washington County arterial roadway, creating the need for expanded capacity and upgraded infrastructure.
Solution
GBI was awarded the project in early 2022 to widen approximately one mile of SW 209th Avenue and reconstruct a half mile of State Highway OR 8. The scope included installation of 4,000 linear feet of waterline and 11,000 linear feet of storm drainage, including a 54-inch directional bore beneath the Union Pacific Railroad and Tualatin Valley Highway.
Additional improvements included sound walls, two temporary signalized intersections, and permanent traffic signals to support long-term roadway safety and mobility.
Notable
The project required extensive coordination with utility providers throughout the project limits, including multiple utility relocations to accommodate phased construction. GBI successfully managed complex traffic control through multiple construction phases over a schedule extending from July 2022 through September 2024, delivering critical roadway improvements while maintaining access through a busy transportation corridor.
