Situation
The section of SR 169 between Ravensdale Road and Pipeline Road was originally constructed in the 1930s and serves as a critical transportation corridor for the communities of Black Diamond, Ravensdale, and Maple Valley. With more than 7,700 vehicles traveling this roadway daily, and significant future growth anticipated from the Ten Trails development, improvements were needed to enhance safety, increase capacity, and improve overall traffic flow.
Solution
Goodfellow Bros. was contracted to widen and reconstruct approximately 1,200 linear feet of roadway as part of a comprehensive traffic-calming and safety improvement project. The centerpiece of the work was the construction of a 60-foot-radius roundabout at the intersection of Pipeline Road and SR 169.
Additional project elements included construction of 11,225 square feet of sidewalk, placement of 80,620 square feet of 10-inch hot mix asphalt pavement, and installation of 2,236 linear feet of underground power lines. The project also required installation of 1,770 linear feet of storm drainage pipe to improve roadway drainage and support long-term infrastructure performance.
Goodfellow Bros. also completed the final roadway channelization and traffic signage improvements necessary to safely direct traffic through the new intersection configuration.
Notable
The Pipeline Road Roundabout was designed to improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians while supporting continued growth in the surrounding communities. The addition of sidewalks, updated traffic control features, and enhanced roadway geometry creates a safer environment for all users.
The new roundabout serves as an effective traffic-calming measure, reducing vehicle speeds while improving traffic flow through the intersection. By replacing the previous intersection configuration with a modern roundabout, the project is expected to reduce conflict points, improve operational efficiency, and decrease the likelihood and severity of traffic accidents for years to come.
