Kapolei Interchange Phase II | Kapolei, Hawai‘i

Situation

For this project, GBI worked with the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) to build a new interchange to help alleviate traffic for the residents of Kapolei, known as O‘ahu’s “second city.” Prior to the start of construction, motorists had to exit the freeway either at Makakilo Drive, which would drop them off at the beginning of Kapolei Town, or at Kalaeloa Boulevard, which would drop them off at the end of Kapolei Town. The addition of the interchange takes motorists straight to the heart of Kapolei. The new interchange was opened to the public in February of 2020.

Solution

GBI built a new overpass using 60” and 72” diameter shafts, 1,135 cubic yards of shaft caps, 1,121 cubic yards of curtain walls, 24 pre-stressed precast girders, 737 cubic yards of deck portion, and 1,236 cubic yards of retaining walls. GBI also poured flex concrete for the PCCP paving, installed soil and shotcrete nail walls, relocated waterlines, installed drain lines, and completed the asphalt paving and striping. Additionally, GBI installed drain inlets, curbs, sidewalks, overhead destination signs, guardrails, street lighting, and new electrical, communication, and traffic signal lines. The GBI project team successfully navigated a series of challenges that included working over live traffic, pouring a skewed bridge deck, waterline conflicts, and time constraints related to daytime and nighttime lane closures.

Notable

This was the first HDOT project to use carbon dioxide-injected concrete, which is stronger and more environmentally friendly. This technology has the potential to reduce more than 500,000 pounds of carbon dioxide for every mile of concrete pavement, which offsets the carbon emissions of more than 550,000 miles of highway driving by a typical passenger vehicle.
