Situation
The Kaipapa’u Stream Bridge, originally built in 1932, is located on Kamehameha Highway, State Route 83, crossing midway between Hau’ula and La’ie. A crucial part of 1 of the only 2 routes into Oahu’s world renown North Shore, is an important transportation link for windward communities. The bridge replacement is one of a series of projects implemented by the Hawai’i Department of Transportation (HDOT) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to ensure compliance with current Federal and State bridge and roadway standards. Construction began in late 2021.
Solution
First, a temporary detour bridge and roadway was constructed to maintain public access during the construction period. The existing bridge was then demolished and over 1,300 cubic yards of reinforced structural concrete was placed during construction of the new bridge. Work also included temporary and permanent water and electrical relocations, asphalt paving, demolition of 2 adjacent dwellings, stream bank stabilization improvements, and site restoration.
Notable
The new Kaipapa’u Stream Bridge was completed in 2025. It is 28’ longer and 16’ wider than the previous bridge and designed to withstand a 100-year storm event.
