Situation
The Fort Stevens State Park Campground Improvements project was one of six major initiatives aimed at revitalizing Oregon’s state parks and campground facilities. The project focused on modernizing aging infrastructure throughout multiple campground loops within the park, with an emphasis on upgrading utility services for campsites. Additional improvements included the replacement of the Peter Iredale day-use restroom facility and the reconstruction of the campground’s original 1955 restroom and shower building.
Solution
GBI served as the prime contractor for this comprehensive infrastructure improvement project. The work involved replacing existing sanitary sewer, potable water, and electrical systems serving 217 campsites throughout the campground. In total, GBI installed more than 31,400 linear feet of underground utilities to support the upgraded infrastructure.
Additional project elements included:
- Abandonment and retrofit of existing sanitary sewer lift stations
- Construction of 42 ADA-accessible campsites
- 172,700 square feet of asphalt trench restoration
- 328,900 square feet of asphalt overlay
- Construction of a new 1,000-square-foot CMU restroom and shower facility
Through careful planning and coordination, GBI successfully delivered critical infrastructure upgrades while maintaining access and functionality within the park.
Notable
Completing construction within an active state park presented a unique set of challenges. GBI navigated constrained work areas within a heavily forested environment while managing existing utilities, deep excavations, poor soil conditions, and significant groundwater infiltration. Despite these complexities, the team successfully completed the project while minimizing impacts to park operations and delivering long-lasting improvements that enhance the visitor experience for years to come.
