Situation
The Hawaii Department of Transportation wanted to construct an environmentally friendly Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility at Kahului Airport, as part of the State’s $2.7 billion airports modernization program.
Solution
GBI was hired to provide mass excavation and embankment of the project, structural excavation for the ConRAC facility footprint, and demolition and reconstruction of the existing Kahului Airport parking lot. We installed all heavy site utilities, including water, sewer, drainage, and fuel vault systems. Additionally, we were responsible for installation of site concrete pavement, including curbs and retaining walls.
The projected completion date was the fall of 2018, but GBI had finished the majority of our work by the end of 2017.
Notable
The facility introduces, maintains, and enhances environmental, social, and cultural elements that distinguish the airport from others. It is also certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver.
Funding for this project came entirely from the daily $4.50 fee applied to customers who rent a car, and no taxpayer dollars were used.
