Situation
Cedar Hills Regional Landfill is a municipal landfill near Maple Valley, Washington. As part of the effort to expand its capacity, GBI was hired to construct new storm water ponds and decommission the old ones.
Solution
GBI excavated the existing trash (465,000 cubic yards) that was placed in the landfill more than a half century ago. We installed a new main gas piping system and constructed a new access road around the expanded landfill. We also screened a portion of the existing trash to remove the usable dirt (the first company ever to achieve this), so that it could be reused for the landfills daily cover requirements. We also permanently closed a section of the existing landfill, installing 60” mil LLDPE covers.
Notable
At no additional cost to the owner, GBI constructed a new access road straight up the side of the existing landfill, separating our hauling operations from the heavily trafficked landfill operations. Because this route was actually shorter, it sped up the project duration while also reducing the risk of accidents.
