Situation
The original Beaverton High School, which opened in 1916, was constructed with only 21 classrooms and is believed to be the oldest still-in-use public high school in the state. With the passing of the Beaverton School District bond in 2022, now up to 1,500 students will be enrolled in the new three story, 290,000 SF building. The project consists of the new high school building, site improvements, demolition of the existing school, and renovations to the sports fields all while on an occupied campus.
Solution
GBI was responsible for the structural excavation, underground utilities, and grading for the concrete flatwork, turf fields, & roadways. This entailed 36,000 LF of onsite and right-of-way underground piping and just over 1,000,000 SF of fine grading. Additionally, we installed 57,000 SF of R-Tanks (Modular Underground Detention System) which consisted of constructing and installing 17,858 modules across 8 different systems.
Notable
During the project, GBI made efforts to complete the right of way improvements with minimal traffic disruptions in the area around the school. Diligent coordination between Skanska and Beaverton School District ensured no disruptions to the school bus routes during the school year and sequencing of work that interferes with school operations being completed during the school breaks.
