Jim Goodfellow Sr. was one of three brothers who founded our great company in 1921. From the start, Jim tried to better the community he lived in. He showed compassion and empathy for the people he hired. He was known to teach English to migrant workers in the evenings after work. He always made time to listen and care about each and every workers’ unique situation and was always willing to lend a hand, either monetarily or by labor. Jim Sr. was also the man behind the Goodfellow Bros.’ profit sharing plan – the beginning of what we have today. His legacy of acting with humility, putting people first and giving back to our communities is the foundation for our company’s service-oriented values and mission.

As the longest serving employee in our company’s history, Dale Moore worked for Goodfellow Bros. for 64 years. When he retired in 2017, he had worked for all four generations of Goodfellows. Dale was born and raised in the Methow Valley of Washington State. He was hard working and tough, in the sense that he could handle any project that came his way no matter the geography or complexity. Dale was “all in.” He played a key role in several projects early-on in Hawaii that helped build our positive reputation, including Waikoloa Hilton in the 80s and the Kalaupapa Airport job in the early 90s. He was a hands-on leader and excellent operator of any piece of equipment. His actions and attitude embodied what has now become the Goodfellow Way. He was always at the ready to help when community members needed a helping hand. He had high standards and cared about his team. He has been quoted by his wife to say, “Dale has always felt it was the employees that made the company.”

Bill gates was born in Pecos, TX and moved to Sacramento, CA in 1951 at the age of eight. He is the oldest of three boys that have all found success within the construction industry. He started his construction career right out of high school, hired by Nick Cianciarulo as a Field Engineer for Santa Clara County. He continued his career with Freeman Sondgroth Construction where his management of rigorous projects such as the expansion of highway 680 and the 101 bypass in Gilroy, CA helped him build his knowledge base in field operations. Bill was one of the founding partners, along with Dan Lowry, of Grade Way Construction, now RGW, in 1977.

Leveraging relationships with general building contractors, local developers, and homebuilders, Bill founded Top Grade Construction with his brother Bob Gates, Bob Chance, and Randy Hahn in 1990. Those early clients continue to be repeat and loyal GBI customers today. In 2012, Bill made the decision to sell Top Grade to Goodfellow Bros. Bill now consults for Goodfellow Bros., nurturing the valuable relationships he has cultivated over his 57-year career.

He lived by the words of his father, to always be honest, to treat people as he wanted to be treated and, once he had a customer, to keep them for life. Bill continues to be known for his enthusiasm, energy, and passion for the construction industry. Additionally, Bill was the recipient of the United Contractors Group Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.

Bud Junger served as a Superintendent for Goodfellow Bros. for 42 years. He went anywhere we had or were looking for work. Known for his many “isms” Bud loved Goodfellow Bros. and lived its values, which reflected in every aspect of his work. Bud was a problem solver by nature; there wasn’t a project or problem he couldn’t solve. Early on in his career at GBI, he was empowered by the family to put his considerable people and construction skills to work and teach as many people as possible along the way. Bud treated people as his equal and made it his business to know how each and every person was doing on the job site. Day or night, you could call him anytime. It was said that “Bud slept with his boots on.” Bud’s repeating theme for his teams was: "we’ve figured out tough stuff before and we’ll get through this too."

To deserve consideration for the Bud Junger Field First Award, the nominee must be a proven leader in the field. They demonstrate care and compassion for their crew including effective mentorship and development. They believe communication and collaboration are keys to achieving success in the field and are known to bring the most challenging projects to successful completion. To deserve consideration for the Bill Gates Customer Service Award, the nominee must be an exemplary role model of someone who builds effective client relationships and provides extraordinary customer service. They practice the “human touch” and go above and beyond to understand our clients’ needs, ensuring we are the contractor of choice. They are passionate about our industry and the people in it.
