For years, the Livermore Girls Softball Association (LGSA) has battled unplayable field conditions due to poor drainage and persistent bad weather during the critical early months of the season. Rainstorms would leave the four main fields, and two tee-ball fields waterlogged, sometimes requiring weeks to dry. This not only disrupted scheduled games but also prevented LGSA from hosting tournaments—impacting both player experience and the league’s funding.
As a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit organization, LGSA relies entirely on league registrations and tournament bookings for funding. Seeing an opportunity to help, GBI stepped in to make a lasting impact.
Transforming the Fields for Playability and Longevity
Our dedicated teams got to work, implementing key improvements to ensure the fields could withstand future storms. GBI crews:
- Cleared existing drains and installed 150 feet of new drainage to direct water away from the infields.
- Re-graded and adjusted infield elevations to prevent flooding and improve playability.
- Graded surrounding areas to ensure proper water flow toward the new drainage system.
- Imported 150 tons of SF Giants stadium infield mix and 35 tons of rock to reinforce the playing surfaces.
This was a true community effort. With the help of our local partners—CRESCO Rentals, Sunbelt, PTI Trucking & Soils, Tri-Valley Water Trucks, and Vulcan Materials—we secured donated and discounted materials, maximizing our impact.
A Season of Success
The results were immediate. This season, LGSA has been able to play every scheduled game—even after storms, the fields were playable the very next day with minimal prep work. This improvement has helped accommodate a record-high 470 girls registered in the league this year.
To recognize our contributions, LGSA honored GBI at their Opening Day Ceremony, inviting our crew to stand along the first-base line as they were thanked by players, families, and league members. In a special moment, GBI’s California Safety Engineer, Aubree Link, threw out the first pitch to our Master Mechanic’s daughter, Emma Stroud, marking a perfect way to celebrate Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day.
